OPEN LETTER TO TED YOHO; FROM GREEN COVE SPRINGS CONSTITUENT SARAH SMITH

If the Department of Education is eliminated, so is our family’s guaranteed access to free and appropriate public education for our child.

Dear Congressman Yoho,

I am a Navy spouse. My husband has served in the United States Navy for 18 years. Our 8 year old daughter, Audrey, has special needs.

As a military family, we move often, in order to provide my husbands service and expertise where our country deems he is needed most. In fact, while we are your constituents because we are legal residents of Green Cove Springs, (and therefore vote there,) we have not resided there for 11 years.

You have stated that you support the elimination of the Department of Education. This would be disastrous for families like mine. We rely on the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, provided by the federal Department of Education, to ensure that our child receives a free and appropriate public education regardless of which state we happen to currently reside. My husband has a very limited choice of which orders he can select, so we often don’t have the luxury of choosing which state we reside in. If the Department of Education is eliminated, so is our family’s guaranteed access to free and appropriate public education for our child.

Please reconsider your position on this issue. Military families who have special needs children depend on the Department of Education.

Sincerely,

Sarah Smith
Legal Resident of Green Cove Springs
