Fed, State and Local Activity Jan 28 – Feb 2

Hello team!

Before we dive in, please note that our February Chapter Meeting will be this Saturday, February 2, 10am at the Cone Park Branch Library (2801 E University Ave, Gainesville, FL 32641). Come out and see us!

FEDERAL
This is the first week that we have not had to deal with the government shutdown since we began the newsletter.

Here is an article detailing what re-opening the government will entail. (It is also worth noting that government contractors are excluded from back pay. “Everyone from janitors at federal buildings to the security guards and cafeteria workers are excluded from the back pay guarantee. It’s just yet another example of how low-wage workers have shouldered the heaviest burdens of the partial government shutdown, and how they have little recourse to get back the work hours and money they deserve.”)

And here is a piece detailing the scenarios for preventing the next shutdown, which could occur in three short weeks.

Indivisible National has boiled down what comes next into practical terms for our members: “Conference Committee. The House and Senate will each select members for the conference committee (‘conferees’), who will be tasked with coming to an agreement on DHS funding levels by Feb. 15.

“The most important thing that you can do is to make sure that your three MoCs continue to hear the message that Trump’s demands are unacceptable.”
