Fed, State and Local Activity Apr 1 – 6

It is Spring Break for Alachua County School and many parents are traveling with their family think week, including us. This week’s state and federal sections will be a bit abbreviated, but we will be dedicating much of our Indivisible Gainesville Chapter meeting to Florida Legislative Session. As the kids say (or, in the case of our household, deny they say and are completely mortified when we say it) deets below.

Gainesville City Commission Rental Housing Subcommittee Meeting. Indivisible Gainesville wholeheartedly endorses the protections for renters that the Alachua County Labor Coalition has advanced and that the City Commission has been discussing. (Read our endorsement here.)

Ordnances are being crafted and community input is needed–because the landlords are certainly making their case that the status quo is fine. While the vast majority of landlords in Gainesville are excellent, there are slumlords who are preying on the poor and vulnerable in the community and they need to be addressed.

The agenda for the meeting can be found here.
Time: 3:00pm
Location: 200 East University Ave, Room 16 Roberta Lisle Kline Conference Room

Alachua County School Board Regular Meeting. Agenda can be found here.
Time: 6:00pm
Location: Boardroom at the District Office, 620 East University Avenue.

Gainesville City Commission Regular Meeting. Agenda can be found on this page.
Time: 1pm + 5:30pm
Location: 200 East University Ave, Room 16 Roberta Lisle Kline Conference Room

Indivisible Gainesville Postcard Writing! Come and join us as we write notes to our representatives about legislation that we feel strongly about. Great company, lively conversations–and snacks!
Time: 7pm
Location: Gainesville Friends Meeting House – 702 NW 38th St, 32607 (To thank the Gainesville Friends for letting us use their space so many times, we are asking for donations to help with their ongoing collection for Gainesville Community Ministry. Please bring a dry good or hygiene product as you are able!)

Indivisible Gainesville’s April Chapter Meeting As we mentioned above, we will be discussing the status of some bills that have a strong possibility of passing that need our attention. More deets later this week.
Time: 10am
Location: Headquarters Branch Alachua County Library District Meeting Room A. 401 East University Ave, 32601

The bills we addressed last week, especially curtailing Amendment 4 and expanding the Guardian program to arm teachers (SB 7030) are still in play. Read more about them (and get representatives’ contact info) in last week’s blog, here.

April 3 Day of Action to stop SB 7030. There is a bus trip from Gainesville to Tallahassee being planned by March For Our Lives and the Florida Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence to fight to stop SB 7030, Deets (and sign up info) can be found here.

We’re skipping federal activity this week. Check out Indivisible National’s page (here) for updates and actions.

Have a great week!
